§2 · We Did the Math (Somebody Had To)

Jokes aside for one minute. We pulled NJ Transit’s and Amtrak’s actual published schedules (GTFS, June 2026) and modeled every train through the North River Tunnels — the two single-track tubes under the Hudson that every NY-bound train must share. Here’s a representative Wednesday.

Note the shape: at 8 AM the inbound tube runs at 91% while the outbound tube is half empty (45%). At 5 PM it flips. The tunnel’s biggest untapped asset is literally the other tube.

The 8 AM crush, train by train

Every tick is a real scheduled train entering the inbound tube, 6:45–9:15 AM. Red marks the tube sitting empty for 5–7 minutes — during the crush — while headways elsewhere pinch to 1 minute. Spacing irregularity CV 0.54; anything over 0.4 is officially “bunched.” Bottom row: the same 46 trains, spaced evenly. No new tunnel required.

The even version isn’t fantasy: at a safe 2.5-minute headway that window fits 57 trains. Today it carries 46 — and still leaves seven multi-minute holes. The PM peak is worse: nine holes, one 8 minutes wide, ending at exactly 5:00 PM.

Raritan Valley riders: 16 slots all day and the “one-seat ride” remains a beautiful rumor. Bergen, Main, Pascack Valley and Atlantic City riders: you don’t even get tunnel jokes — transfer at Secaucus or Hoboken. Our condolences.

Honesty corner: schedules give platform times rounded to the minute, and NY Penn has 21 platform tracks — so literal nose-to-tail conflicts can’t be proven from public data alone (that needs Amtrak’s signaling layout, which they should absolutely hand over). The bunching and the idle gaps are real. The point stands.

§3 · If an Intelligent Being Ran the Show

This analysis was done with Claude, an AI, in an afternoon, with public data and a laptop. But honestly, any intelligent being would do: a scheduler, a spreadsheet, a sufficiently motivated raccoon. The fix list, in ascending order of requiring adults to cooperate:

  1. Space the trains evenly

    Peak headways currently swing 1→7 minutes. Even spacing adds zero trains and buys the thing riders actually feel: fewer cascading meltdowns when one train hiccups. This is arithmetic, not infrastructure.

  2. Stop leaving holes in the peak

    The inbound tube sits empty for ~7 minutes at 8:29, 8:54 and 9:12 AM while platforms overflow. Use the holes — run a train, or officially bank them as recovery slots. Right now they’re just… vibes.

  3. Flatten the spike

    22 trains cram into the 8 AM hour while the shoulders run 15–17. Cheaper shoulder fares plus staggered start times: same tunnel, less drama.

  4. Make NJT and Amtrak share one brain

    Amtrak owns the tunnel and the dispatching; NJ Transit runs three of every four peak trains; at 8 AM, four slots are intercity trains with far more scheduling slack than your commute has. One shared optimizer, one source of truth, no phone-call diplomacy.

  5. Give the Hudson one owner

    Today nobody is accountable for the only number that matters: trains-per-hour-through-the-river, and how fast we recover when one slips. Don’t fire people — fire the org chart.

  6. Tell riders the truth in real time

    “Operational issues” is not information. A live model that knows which train holds and which goes could also just… tell you. On your phone. Before you sprint to Track 8.

Cost of all the software above: well under $100M — less than 1% of the ~$16B being spent on the new Gateway tunnels — and it works in 1–3 years instead of ~2035.

To be clear: build the new tunnels. We would simply also like to stop tripping over our own shoelaces for the decade while the concrete pours. New tubes ~2035; the 1910 tubes rehabbed by ~2038. This website will still be here. Sadly, so will the delays.
